This 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 was first sold by Pfeiffer Lincoln-Mercury of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the seller acquired it in October 1990 and has since added 500 of its 1,900 indicated miles. The car features brushed stainless-steel bodywork with black textured stripes, and it is powered by a 2.85-liter V6 paired with a three-speed automatic transaxle. Equipment includes gullwing doors, gray leather upholstery, a louvered rear window cover, air conditioning, staggered-diameter alloy wheels, and dealer-installed cruise control. The car was reportedly stored between 1995 and 2019, and it was mechanically refurbished before it was displayed at the 2021 Concours d’Elegance of America in Plymouth, Michigan.
The Giugiaro-styled bodywork features brushed-stainless-steel panels and urethane front and rear fasciae mounted on a composite underbody and a Lotus-derived steel chassis. Features include gullwing doors, gray scotch-cal side stripes, a grooved hood, a front spoiler, and dual exhaust outlets. The rear window louver was repaired and a factory reinforcement bracket was fitted, and the headlights and hood and trunk struts were replaced in 2020. The seller states the car was ordered with a right-front fender-mounted antenna, but the system was replaced with an integrated interior component.
Turbine-style wheels measure 14″ in diameter up front and 15″ out back, and they were mounted in 2020 with General Altimax RT43 tires measuring 195/60 and 225/60, respectively. March 2020 service included brake caliper rebuilds and replacement of the brake master cylinder, shocks and struts, and brake pads, rotors, and lines.
The seats are upholstered in gray leather with a matching dashboard, center console, and door panels, and black mats protect the gray carpets. Amenities include a cassette stereo, power windows, and a dealer-installed cruise control system. The door struts, left window regulator, and front and rear headliners were replaced in 2021, and air-conditioning system was recently repaired.
The three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames an 85-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for battery voltage, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit mechanical odometer indicates just over 1,900 miles.
The 2.85-liter V6 features Bosch Jetronic fuel injection and was factory rated at 130 horsepower and 153 lb-ft of torque when new. Service performed in 2020 included fluid changes, rebuilds of the fuel distributor, control pressure regulator, and fuel injectors, and replacement of the alternator, fuel tank, fuel pump, battery, frequency valve, fuel accumulator, compressor pulley bearings, spark plugs, and gaskets, filters, and hoses.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transaxle.
A copy of the window sticker lists factory equipment, options, and a total suggested retail price of $26,825. Original purchase documents and service records are also included in the sale, along with removed factory suspension and engine components, and the seller’s description and history of the car.
